Prof I Iannucci  Applications accepted all year round  Funded PhD Project (European/UK Students Only)

About the Project

Over the past several years’ significant research have been directed towards the development of techniques to “cloak” an object, basically making it invisible to certain wavelength, which could be in the human visible regime.

The proposed study will investigate a new class of metamaterial based on spherical particles with a fluid matrix using composite materials as an interface. The study will use advanced numerical modelling techniques to investigate proof of principle applications for acoustic and stress wave control applications, such as noise reduction, acoustic cannons for remote IED detonation and blast/ impact wave dissipation. These new materials could provide a dramatic improvement to noise damping and stress wave energy management for acoustic energy creation and energy dissipation, potential opening and developing new research

Applicants should have a keen interest in numerical modelling and should possess good analytical skills. An aptitude for experimental research work is desirable. Applications are invited from candidates with (or who expect to gain) a good upper-second or first-class honours degree in Aeronautics or related Engineering areas.

The rules on who is eligible are strict and cannot be changed. UK citizens are eligible, as are EU citizens who have been resident in the UK for the 3 years preceding the date of application. Non-EU students are ineligible, unless they have been ordinarily resident in the UK for 3 years preceding the date of application for purposes other than education The studentship is for three years starting as soon as possible and will provide full coverage of tuition fees and an annual tax-free stipend of circa £15,590.

Applications will be assessed as received and all applicants should follow the standard College (http://www3.imperial.ac.uk/pgprospectus/howtoapply). Informal enquiries and request for additional information can be made at the address below.
