Prof M Saunders  No more applications being accepted  Funded PhD Project (European/UK Students Only)

About the Project

Applications are invited for a NERC-funded PhD studentship in Development of European Extreme Weather Climatologies. Based at Mullard Space Science Laboratory located near Guildford, Surrey, UK, MSSL is part of the Department of Space and Climate Physics, University College London, and has a strong track record of research into weather extremes and of commercialising such research. The studentship is available immediately and must start by September/October 2011.

The project will examine the following weather extremes: extreme rainfall, temperature extremes (hot and cold), and heatwave and freeze incidence. For these extremes the project will derive exceedance probability distributions and trends for various locations and levels of spatial resolution across Europe using an untapped state-of-the-art Met Office European observational database. The research will provide scientific excellence, valuable input to the next International Panel on Climate Change report and, through its derived products, help businesses further understand their risk from extreme weather.

Applicants must have a first class or 2.1 undergraduate degree in a relevant physical, mathematical or computational subject.
