About the Project
Background
Cattle farming systems which rely mainly on grasslands and agro-industrial resources that are non-edible for humans may be more sustainable than cattle production systems which use feedstuffs that could also be used as human food. The SUSTAINBeef project is an ERA-Net project with partners in 5 EU member states (including Teagasc and UCD in Ireland) examining the sustainability of grass-based beef production systems within the EU.
The objectives of the SUSTAINBeef project are:
1. To co-define a set of environmental, social and economic indicators to compare the sustainability of contrasted beef production systems
2. To co-define potential scenarios for the evolution of more sustainable cattle farming systems in the main EU beef production regions.
Funding is available for a four year PhD fellowship modelling the sustainability of Irish beef systems using the FarmDyn systems model. Working under the supervision of staff in UCD and Teagasc as well as in close collaboration with staff at the University of Bonn, the student will update the FarmDyn model with data for representative Irish farms. The student will then use the model to examine the economic and environmental sustainability of the representative farms under alternative policy scenarios as well as differing technical assumptions.
This fellowship awarded under the Teagasc Walsh Fellowship programme allows the successful candidate the opportunity to complete a PhD under the supervision of UCD and Teagasc, while also collaborating closely with staff of other leading European research institutions.
Requirements
Candidates should have a first or upper second-class honours degree in agricultural science, economics, environmental science or a related subject. It is expected that the student will be based at UCD and at Teagasc, Grange during the PhD programme.

Funding Notes
The successful candidate will be expected to register with the School of Agriculture and Food Science at University College Dublin for a 4-year Ph.D. degree. The fellowship provides an annual award of €22,000 for 4 years. University fees of €6,000 a year are deducted from the annual fellowship with the remaining money being paid to the student in the form of a monthly stipend. The Fellowship will start as soon as possible after 1st of August 2019.
