Why is doctoral researcher training so important?

The cultural and creative economies of the UK and Europe need skilled and knowledgeable people to lead the way in the widest range of activities from policy making to heritage management, from artistic direction to developing a more nuanced historical narrative, and from the study of languages to philosophical study to inform a broader understanding of the human experience.

We want to give our students the best chance possible to become leading voices in their chosen fields. By offering a research environment with the right mix of challenge and support, we give our students the freedom to excel in their research. We also hope that students will take this experience forward into their academic and professional lives.

Year 1: What Now: Making the most of WRoCAH As students progress through their doctoral research, priorities will change. The first challenge is getting settled into a research environment and developing an enhanced level of self-awareness.
Year 2: Who With: Working with Partners Once established, WRoCAH doctoral researchers are encouraged to develop their thinking about how they communicate, looking beyond their immediate research area and keeping an eye on the future.

A central part of the second year of a PhD with WRoCAH is the completion of a real project with an external partner organisation. During this one month project students will be able to develop transferrable skills to enhance their CV and gain invaluable experience of an working environment where they can apply their unique skills.
Year 3: What Next: Life after PhD The third year of the WRoCAH training programme focuses on bringing PhD research to a successful conclusion and making sure they are best prepared to take their next step which may be in academia or beyond.
