About the Project

Bone and nacre (abalone shell) are two prime examples of natural materials that combine strength with toughness. Both comprise hard ceramic phase e.g. calcium phosphate or carbonate and soft polymeric phase e.g. collagen or other proteins with unique hierarchical structures. The challenge is how to generate synthetic ceramic/polymer composites with such hierarchical structures from a cost-effective engineering route in order to produce strong and tough structural materials for possible medical and engineering applications e.g. in dental restorations and orthopaedic implants.

The project aims at developing bio-inspired and biomimetic composites using a novel freeze casting technique. The project involves the formulation of material composition and microstructural characterisation using a range of microscopic techniques such as SEM, TEM, microCT. Mechanical testing will be carried out using standard methods and in situ to enhance the understanding of fracture mechanisms of such hierarchically structured composites
