PhD Studentship in History: Religion and the supernatural in early modern England

The University of Worcester is seeking to grow its research strength in History. In the government’s Research Excellence Framework (REF2014), History was our top performing subject area with 20% of our published research in History judged to be ‘world leading’ and 30% ‘internationally excellent’. Additionally, 70% of our research was judged as having a ‘very considerable’ impact on wider society while the History team’s ‘strong collaborative base’ was acknowledged. We are seeking researchers who will benefit from that environment while helping consolidate and re-shape existing specialisms in medical humanities, women and the home front in WWI and II, international history, and early modern history.

Applications are invited for a fully-funded, full-time, PhD studentship at the University of Worcester in History, aligned with the expertise of one or more of our History researchers. This is one of a number of research projects in competition for one PhD Studentship in History. The project which receives the best applicant will be awarded the funding. Project 6: Religion and the supernatural in early modern England

The proposed project would explore the interplay between English Protestant doctrine and the beliefs and experiences of the wider community, c 1560-1700. Potential themes include the accommodation of traditional attitudes towards the world of spirits, and the presentation and reception of reformed ideas about salvation and the afterlife.

This research is funded by the University of Worcester. The student will be expected to carry out their individual research study under the direction of Dr Darren Oldridge (Director of Studies, University of Worcester).


Applicants should have a First or Upper Second (2.1) Honours Degree, or expect to receive one by October 2016. Education to Masters Degree level in a relevant subject area would be advantageous. A sound understanding of, and interest in one of the areas of History outlined above is also essential. Excellent oral and written English are a must, as are a commitment and enthusiastic approach to completing a higher research degree.
