University of Cambridge, Infection & Immunity 4 Year PhD Programme

Up to six studentships will be available beginning in October 2010.

This Programme involves a collaboration between the School of Clinical Medicine, the Cambridge Institute for Medical Research, the Department of Pathology, the Department of Veterinary Medicine, and the Department of Biochemistry.

The major themes are basic cell and molecular biology (including structural and cell biology), immunity and infection. 

Basic cell and molecular biology (including structural and cell biology), immunity and infectionThe first year of training involves literature-driven in-depth analyses of topics of research relevant to the overall themes of the Programme and 3 mini-projects selected by the students offered by research laboratories involved in each of the Programme themes. At the end of the first year, students are assessed formally for a Master degree on the basis of a portfolio of written and practical laboratory projects.

Students then choose a supervisor for their 3-year PhD thesis projects, which are carried out during years 2-4.

A starting stipend of approximately £18,685 per annum is offered. The studentships will include research costs, and tuition fees at the UK/EU rate. 

Students with, or expecting to attain, at least an upper second class honours degree are invited to apply.  Funding to meet the additional fees for overseas students may be available.

  1. Your CV where you clearly state your 1st degree final grade. If you are an undergraduate please indicate the expected grade
  2. A letter of application where you explain the reasons why you are applying for the PhD Programme in Infection and Immunity
  3. A letter of reference from two referees, one of whom should be/have been a project supervisor. Please ask your two referees to provide you with their letter of reference in a sealed envelope or to have the letters sent directly to Ms Gonella.
