EPSRC-funded Centres for Doctoral Training provide a supportive and exciting environment for students to carry out a challenging PhD-level research project combined with taught coursework. All of the centres have a strong emphasis on team working and joint problem solving. Some of the Centres have a multi-disciplinary focus allowing students to build strong expertise in their “home” discipline while developing the skills and knowledge to cross disciplinary boundaries effectively. Others have a strong industrial focus and offer an alternative to the traditional PhD with students spending 75% of their time working directly within a specific collaborating company.
Each centre has been funded to support between three and five annual cohorts of up to ten students. All students within a centre will:
-
Be supported for four years;
-
Undertake a formal programme of taught coursework to develop and enhance technical knowledge across a range of appropriate disciplines, as well as broadening skills.
