Good degree in the Physical or Life Sciences?
Interested in biological or medical research?
We offer fully-funded PhD places across the Oxford Doctoral Training Centre programmes: Life Sciences Interface, Systems Biology and Systems Approaches to Biomedical Science Industrial Doctorate Centre. PhD supervisors are drawn from at least 10 different departments across the University.
Systems Approaches to Biomedical Science
Industrial Doctorate Centre
Candidates are invited to apply to the University of Oxford’s Systems Approaches to Biomedical Sciences Industrial Doctorate PhD* programme. This exciting new interdisciplinary field addresses the major challenges in developing a systems-level approach to drug development, genomic epidemiology and biotechnology. It draws on advances in basic research into biological systems and is designed for future innovators and research leaders in the pharmaceutical, biomedical, imaging, biotechnology and health related sectors. Students work with leading research groups both in industry and academia.
A major advantage of the Systems Approaches to Biomedical Sciences programme is that you are not required to choose your PhD project immediately. You undertake two terms of taught modules covering the breadth of scientific knowledge and techniques needed to carry out research in this area, followed by two 10 week research projects with prospective PhD supervisors before making your decision. All students are given the opportunity to develop core skills in mathematical and computational modelling, bioinformatics, data analysis and scientific communication, and to gain hands-on experience in modern laboratory techniques.
You will experience research areas, supervisors, industrial settings, research groups and academic thought that may be completely new to you. Current research areas range from imaging techniques that assist drug development, to epigenetic stem cell research.

We welcome applications from students who hold, or are on target to achieve a 1st or 2:1 degree in mathematics, computing or a physical or life sciences subject and from mature students with relevant interests and expertise. Full studentships are available to home students and fees-only studentships are available to EU students (EPSRC eligibility criteria apply) for the forthcoming academic year.
