CoMPLEX is UCL's centre for interdisciplinary science that brings life and medical scientists together with mathematicians, physical scientists, computer scientists and engineers to tackle the challenges arising from complexity in biology and medicine. The four-year interdisciplinary MRes/PhD programme in modelling biological complexity run by CoMPLEX, trains students to work at the interface between mathematics, engineering, physics and the life sciences. In this integrated programme, the first year is an MRes year during which students are trained in biological complexity, mathematical modeling of biological systems and advanced experimental techniques. After successful completion of the MRes year students typically continue for a three year period of research leading to a PhD.

PhD interests lie within these areas:
  • Biomolecular Mechanisms
  • Integration of Cellular Function
  • Physiological and Neural Systems
  • Evolution and Dynamics of Populations
  • Interdisciplinary Cardiovascular Research
  • Cancer Biology
  • Systems Biology
  • Modelling Complex Natural Systems

CoMPLEX has recently been awarded a cross disciplinary research grant to produce a new generation of highly computational natural scientists able to apply novel approaches to tackle fundamental problems in science. Students applying to join CoMPLEX in 2012/2013 will be the first to have the opportunity of working alongside these researchers in modelling complex natural systems.

Modelling Biological Complexity To apply you must complete the online UCL graduate application form. Once you have submitted your form it is essential that you email CoMPLEX, complex.admin@ucl.ac.uk, stating your name, your UCL application number (you will find this on the 'Application Completed' screen), and the date you submitted your application.

If you are unable to use the online application process, please apply using the downloadable version of the application form. If you apply in this way, it is essential that you send a copy of your completed form, including copies of any attachments (e.g. references), to CoMPLEX at the address below, in addition to submitting your application to UCL Admissions.

Applications for the second round are now open, fully complete applications must be received by the deadline, 5pm 17th February 2012.

Studentships for Home/EU students are available covering tuition fees and paying a tax-free stipend (2012/13 rate is £17,090). For further details of funding for all students please see FAQs.
