Studentship Award
The Department of Law is accepting new applications for a studentship award, granted by the Leverhulme Trust, to fund socio-legal research into the area of Irish Political Prisoners (1960-2000).

Research Topic
Under the supervision of Professor Seán McConville and another experienced academic, the successful candidate will work within the overall research topic of Irish Political Prisoners (1960-2000), preferably in one of the following specific areas:
- Political prisoners' families and dependents 1960 – 2000
- The influence of distance learning and education on prisoners' aspirations, thinking and culture-= The contribution that this and similar research on politically motivated prisoners may make to penology more generally
- Comparative studies of politically motivated prisoners
Please submit your proposals on one of the above topics. If you prefer an alternative but possibly related topic you should seek prior approval before you embarking on your research proposal.
Proposals will be judged on the basis of the following core criteria: coherence, affinity to and compatibility with the parent project; appropriate familiarity with the literature; clarity in conceptual and presentational writing; soundness of methodology, and a realistic research plan and practical timeline. You must also demonstrate a familiarity with and support for high standards of ethics in research and scholarly values. Probity, sound judgement and discretion are especially important given the sensitivity of these topics.

About the Award and Eligibility Criteria
This is a unique opportunity to gain experience of a multi-volume research and writing project, now in its fourth decade. A high level of motivation will be expected in addition to the required qualities set out above.
The successful candidate will be expected to work with others on the parent project for approximately six hours per week. There will be a variety of tasks including library and special collection as well as archive research and checking queries. Training and direction will be given in all areas including, if appropriate, preparing for and conducting interviews.
The award is for full time postgraduate PhD research students, who are from the UK/EU only, and who will reside in or around the London area for the duration of their doctoral studies.
The award will cover tuition fees for three years and, in addition, the recipient will receive an annual maintenance grant, of £15,863.00 per year.
Only applicants who have completed the online application process to the PhD programme prior to the funding submission deadline, and who have notified us on the appropriate section of the application form that they want Leverhulme Studentship funding will be considered. The recipient must have an academic background in at least one of the fields of Law, History or Politics, as well as a Pass with Distinction on a postgraduate taught degree in one of these subject areas.
The award is renewable over three years of study while in full time enrolment, subject to satisfactory annual progress reports.
At the end of the three years, research students sometimes need further time to complete their research and thesis. This is known as ‘writing up' time. Students only move to writing up when their supervisor confirms that the student has submitted a satisfactory first full draft of the entire thesis for the supervisor's review and the Director of Graduate Studies is satisfied that the student can complete within the year. The writing-up period does not attract full tuition fees, although a reduced writing up fee may be payable. A student in writing up is responsible for his/her own living costs as well as for any writing up fee.
The award is for new applicants looking to enrol at the beginning of the coming academic year, in September 2015. Therefore, existing PhD students who have already enrolled prior to September are not eligible to apply for the award. For applicants currently on MA courses, please note to be eligible to apply for this award, your degree course must finish, and you must graduate (formally receive confirmation of your final overall mark) prior to September.
The final appointment of the chosen funding recipient will be subject to Leverhulme Trust approval.

Deadline
The deadline for Studentship applications to the School of Law is Monday 1 June 2015.
You must have completed the main PhD application process, including the submission of all required supporting documentation, by the deadline date in order to be considered.
