EPSRC & MRC Centre for Doctoral Training in Biomedical Imaging

The EPSRC and MRC CDT in Biomedical Imaging is an exciting collaboration between the Universities of Oxford and Nottingham. The programme combines world-leading expertise in all aspects of cellular and clinical biomedical imaging across both institutions to create the next generation of industrial, healthcare and academic leaders in this vital field of research.

The CDT's four-year programme of research and training has strong industrial support and is highly multi-disciplinary, accepting students from a wide range of quantitative scientific backgrounds focussing on promoting links for bi-directional translation between optical microscopy and cellular imaging, pre-clinical and clinical imaging.

For entry in October 2018, there are two programme routes (A and B). These follow the same pattern initially: the first seven months of the course are devoted to acquiring advanced theoretical and technical skills that form the backbone of Biomedical Imaging, drawing from the engineering, mathematical, physical, chemical and biological sciences through a combination of intensive lecture courses and project work. The two routes divide when reaching the end of this initial training phase.

Route A:

Students who successfully apply for a specific industrially-linked project will commence their doctoral research immediately at the end of the taught training phase. They will also receive a stipend enhancement during Years 2-4 of their training to reflect the emphasis we place on industry-linked projects. This route is best suited to those with defined pre-existing research interests, or who intend to pursue a career in industry.

Route B:

All other students (i.e. not already committed to an industry-inked project) will undertake two exploratory Research Projects of 11 weeks duration after completion of the taught training phase, at least one of which will be in the institution to which the candidate is admitted (Oxford or Nottingham). These may or may not be industry linked. The substantive PhD research project (chosen between the two exploratory projects) then follows at the beginning of the second year, also based primarily in the host institution. This route is best suited to those who are still exploring their research options, allowing a more informed choice of substantive research project.

Both routes will receive relevant research and communication skills training throughout the four-years of the programme.

Please note that for entry in October 2018 we intend to prioritise Route A applicants. Shortlisted Route A applicants who are not awarded an industry-project will be automatically considered for the Route B competition.
