2015-16 Clinical Trials PhD Studentships

We invite applications for PhD studentships from the start of the 2015–16 academic year. This is a unique opportunity to conduct research on the prevention and treatment of life threatening emergencies. The studentships are based at the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine Clinical Trials Unit which has a strong focus on research to improve the care of patients with acute life threatening illness and injury.

Potential research areas include but are not limited to:

  1. Prevention and treatment of acute severe bleeding (obstetric, gastrointestinal, traumatic or surgical)
  2. Outcome measures that matter to patients: including quality of life and patient reported outcomes
  3. Efficient clinical trials, including central statistical monitoring and ways to improve trial recruitment
  4. Systematic reviews methods

Value of Award

Funding covers course fees and a student stipend of GBP 16,057.00 (2015-16 RCUK rate).

Eligibility Criteria

The candidates will have received training in epidemiology, biostatistics or a related numerate subject. Applicants must hold, or expect to obtain, a first or upper second class Honours degree and preferably a relevant MSc or other qualifications and experience that demonstrates similar ability. This may include employment or internship in a relevant environment. Ian Roberts, Professor in Epidemiology, and Haleema Shakur, Senior Lecturer in Clinical Trials, will be the supervisors and can be contacted via ctu@lshtm.ac.uk
