International Ph.D. in Criminology

The vision of the International Ph.D. Programme in Criminology is to become the programme of choice for highly qualified students seeking an advanced research degree in Criminology. The Programme views interdisciplinary work and research as the core of its activity and combines to training and teaching. Its aim is to promote innovative and dynamic thinking by blending theory and practice in the fields of criminology, criminal justice, and crime prevention.

The activities of the Ph.D. candidates

The Programme integrates specialized training and research practice. During the 3 years of the Ph.D., candidates attend to courses while participating actively to research projects with increasing responsibilities.

The organizational structure

The Joint Research Centre Transcrime is the scientific support structure of the International Ph.D. in Criminology and today it is an international point of reference for international scholars investigating crime from legal, sociological and economic perspectives.

International dimension

All the activities of the Ph.D. are in English. This includes lectures, seminars, the Ph.D. thesis and the final defense. Ph.D. students may spend a period of study and research abroad in international organisations or European research centres and universities.

Financial support

Every year, the Ph.D. offers several 3-year scholarships of € 13,600 per year to the best candidates (doctoral scholarships are tax-free). Since the beginning of the 2nd year, Ph.D. candidates will have a budget for research expenses in the amount of 10% of the scholarship. At the end of the 1st year, following the admission to the 2nd, Transcrime will increase the monthly scholarship for Ph.D. candidates up to 1300 euro net.

To favour the international scope of the Ph.D., admitted candidates residing abroad may be refunded up to € 5,000 for documented travel and lodging expenses incurred during the first year of Ph.D. for moving to Milan.

How can I apply?

The call for applications for the International Ph.D. Programme in Criminology is available both in English and in Italian here. The candidates interested in applying have to fill in the application form. The form must then be signed and sent in pdf format to transcrime@unicatt.it by 4th September.

In addition to the application, each candidate must enclose:

  • A detailed curriculum vitae et studiorum in English.
  • A research proposal in English for his/her Ph.D. thesis. The proposal should be divided in the following sections: review of the state-of-the-art, research problem and questions, objectives and methodology, expected results and possible limitations. The research proposal must not exceed 20 thousand characters.
  • At least two letters of recommendation.
