University of Bristol, Bristol Centre for Complexity Sciences

Complexity ScienceThe Bristol Centre for Complexity Sciences (BCCS) is a highly interdisciplinary centre for training and research funded by the UK Engineering and Physical Science Research Council (EPSRC).

The Course:

We offer a four-year postgraduate programme which starts with a high quality taught element that provides you with the all the skills needed for an interdisciplinary PhD in Complexity Sciences.

When studying on the BCCS programme you will have the opportunity to work with world class experts from across the University in Biological Sciences, Chemistry, Civil Engineering, Computer Science, Earth Sciences, Electrical Engineering, Engineering Mathematics, Geography, Mathematics, Neuroscience, Social Sciences and Physics.

The course includes lectures covering a wide range of theoretical and applied Complexity subjects, along-side research projects, summer schools, seminars and workshops. There is also an emphasis on transferable skills training, designed to provide you with additional experience to help you get the most out of your course.

Bristol and Bristol UniversityIf you are enthusiastic and motivated with a keen interest in taking up the many challenges and open problems in Complexity Sciences, then we would like to hear from you.

Full studentships are available for up to 10 UK students each year which cover all tuition fees and provide an annual stipend to help with additional living costs. EU students may also be eligible to apply for fees only funding.

The Bristol Centre for Complexity Sciences:

Our aim is to integrate, strengthen and expand the knowledge and expertise in different areas of science and engineering to form a unique training environment for the most promising students from the UK and overseas.

The vision for the BCCS is based on the notion that, whereas application areas in modern science and engineering are abound with problems in complexity, the theory requires considerable development.

We are developing a hub of theoretical and computational expertise that connects a web of challenging application areas. The most important strategic innovation for the organisation of the centre is in this combination of application areas surrounding a hub of theoretical and computational expertise.

Application areas will drive theoretical and computational development by issuing challenges to the hub, which in turn will identify new commonalities between the application areas that can be pushed outwards to solve application-oriented problems. This virtuous cycle will generate world-leading advances in both theory and applications.

The Bristol Centre for Complexity Sciences provides a highly stimulating environment for a selected group of extremely high calibre and motivated PhD students, fostering links between the theoretical hub and application areas so that students emerge 'speaking two languages'.
