Combating Infectious Disease: Computational Approaches in Translational Science (CIDCATS)

Training the next generation of scientists in quantitative biology to support interdisciplinary research in the biomedical sciences

A Wellcome Trust PhD Training Programme

Five studentships are available on this prestigious Wellcome Trust supported PhD training programme in “Combating Infectious Diseases”. This programme provides a unique opportunity to conduct interdisciplinary research at the interface of theory and experiment in the area of infectious disease. A first year of cohort-adaptive group and individual training is followed by a 3 year PhD with cross-disciplinary supervision.

Applicant profile

  • You have a keen interest in biological problems
  • You are excited at the prospect of impacting on our knowledge and treatment of infectious diseases
  • You have excelled in your undergraduate degree in any of these or closely related disciplines:
  • Computer Science
  • Physics
  • Electronics
  • Biology
  • Mathematics
  • Chemistry
  • Engineering
  • You appreciate the importance and demands of interdisciplinary research.

Research themes

The programme is developed around inter-related research themes that are central to our ability to combat infections:

  • Drug Target Identification and Development of Novel Therapies
  • Predictive Modelling of Pathogenesis and Treatment Response
  • Development of Novel Tools for Complex Data Analysis

Interdisciplinary research environmentInterdisciplinary research environment

The programme is led by the Department of Biology with training and research supervision provided by staff from Biology, Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Computer Science, Electronics, and the Hull York Medical School. Our research centres provide the strong interdisciplinary research and training environment: Centre for Immunology and Infection (CII), York Structural Biology Lab (YSBL) and York Centre for Complex System Analysis (YCCSA).
