Our research programmes offer a rich learning experience that combine high-level teaching with the opportunity to pursue rigorous independent study. You will learn from tutors of international standing and share ideas with like-minded postgraduate students. Programmes can be studied full or part time.
We have been recognised by the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC) for the excellence of our research training. ESRC recognition reflects the quality of our student recruitment process and the exceptional training and support you will receive through the Doctoral Training Centre (DTC).
Much of our teaching is interdisciplinary, with education students studying alongside students from many other subjects. In all programmes, there are numerous opportunities for interaction, critique and feedback. Funding from various sources may be available.
MPhil/PhD Education

Our MPhil/PhD Education is designed for ambitious, motivated individuals who wish to make an independent and transforming contribution to their chosen field. We welcome applications from those with interests in the broad fields of education, leadership, inclusion and work-related learning, which align with our academics’ expertise.
You should have a relevant masters degree, either a conventional course or dedicated programme such as our MPhil Research Methodology, and you should have a clear idea of your research topic.
Integrated PhD Education
This four-year flexible PhD aims to develop your professional knowledge and understanding in the context of educational research. It is particularly suitable for overseas candidates looking to convert from other disciplines and for those awarded four-year scholarships through their government or other sources.
Comprising intensive teaching and research training, the programme equips you to undertake educational research projects as part of your career.
Doctorate in Education (EdD)
The EdD is targeted at experienced professionals who are interested in extending your research skills and knowledge base in your chosen field.
The programme includes a substantial taught element. This will give you the knowledge and skills required to complete the research phase, where you will design, implement and disseminate an original research study. Research will usually be conducted in your own work environment.
MPhil Research Methodology
Open to professionals in any field, this taught/research degree is designed to equip policymakers, career researchers, health service professionals and managers who have research responsibilities with the methodological skills required to design, conduct and write up their research for publication or other purposes.
