MPhil and PhD Opportunities

The College of Arts and Social Sciences (CASS) at The Australian National University (ANU) is recognised as the number one university in Australia, and among the best universities in the world, for the arts, humanities and social sciences (Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2011-2012). We offer higher degrees by research through a Master of Philosophy (MPhil) or Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in more than 20 disciplines.

The College has a substantial international research presence and is a major source of national policy advice. It builds on the research strengths of the Research School of Humanities and the Arts, Research School of Social Sciences and the Australian Demographic and Social Research Institute, along with their Schools and Centres.

There are currently more than 600 postgraduate research students in the College. We offer exceptional support for higher degree by research students, including:
  • supervisory panels of at least three staff
  • dedicated office accommodation
  • library and computing facilities
  • some opportunities for sessional work
  • some financial support for fieldwork and conference travel
  • some opportunities to undertake studies at our prestigious International Alliance of Research Universities partners
  • support for students through the Postgraduate and Research Students' Association.

The ANU campus is located on 145 hectares of beautifully-maintained parkland in the centre of the nation's capital, Canberra. Our facilities include a range of on-campus accommodation residences, modern laboratories and lecture theatres, two million volumes on the shelves of five main libraries and access to a wealth of e-resources. The landscaped campus offers all the convenience of a small town, including medical services, a gym, cafés, restaurants, art galleries, sports fields and bookshops.

By studying in Canberra you will have access to the nation's political institutions and cultural and collecting institutions. We also partner with government and industry, which may provide you with opportunities to participate in exchanges, fieldwork, internships, master-classes and more.
