PhD in History

Research at the Department of History and Welsh History, Aberystwyth University

History has been taught at Aberystwyth since the founding of the College in 1872. The Department is one of the largest in the University, and the research interests of its staff extend across the full chronological and geographical range from the Roman period to contemporary political issues, and from Wales and Britain to America, France, and Russia. Interests in comparative history, in 'history from below', and in state building in both the British Isles and France were pioneered in Aberystwyth by historians such as Richard Cobb, R.R. Davies, Gwynne Lewis, R.F. Treharne and Gwyn Alf Williams. A new generation of historians has added to the department's research interests such fields as media history, political culture, Jews in the English-speaking world, peasants in the medieval world, sport, women's and gender history, historiography and the application of computer techniques to the study of the past.

The main focus of the Department's research is on four chronological periods – Medieval, Early Modern, Modern British and European and Modern Wales – and three thematic areas: Historiography, Technological, Scientific and Medical History, and Media History. In addition, the department maintains traditional strengths in, in the broadest terms, religious, political, cultural, social and economic history.

In terms of its research agenda, the Department aims to:

• Generate and disseminate new research
• Transfer research knowledge and skills to all graduates
• Support and find opportunity to develop collaborative activity, both within the Department and with partners in other universities in the UK and beyond

Funding

The Department of History and Welsh History, Aberystwyth University, is pleased to announce up to three new PhD studentships for 2013, under the university's DCDS (Doctoral Career Development Scholarship) scheme.

The DCDS awards offer a package of research, training and career development for full-time PhD students, tailored to enable students to enhance their research, teaching and transferable skills.

The Department is offering up to three awards under the DCDS scheme. These awards will cover full tuition fees for the three years of the PhD for UK/EU students, and a contribution of up to £3900 pa. for non UK/EU students.

Students receiving awards will make an agreed contribution to the Department as a condition of the PhD scholarship (for instance, teaching, research, editorial work, placements, or other appropriate personal development opportunities).

To be eligible you must:

• have at least an upper second class honours in your first degree, and be studying for or have completed a Masters degree in an appropriate subject area
• apply and be offered a place for doctoral study at Aberystwyth
• achievement of 7.0 in IELTS, or equivalent, as the normal case, for non-UK students (before the end of March 2013 at the latest)
• be commencing your doctoral study in September 2013

Deadline: The deadline for this competition is 1 June 2013. All PhD applications received by the Department of History and Welsh History by this date will be automatically considered for these DCDS awards.
