Funded PhD Programme (European/UK Students Only)

About the Programme

Committed to recruiting and supporting talented doctoral researchers, the School of Psychology is looking to recruit PhD students for a PhD in both Psychology and Health Psychology to start Oct 2018. At present we are taking applications for all places (funded and unfunded) but will put out a specific call for funded studentships in March 2018.

The student should have an undergraduate degree in Psychology (>65%) and an MSc in Psychology or a related discipline (>65%).

The School of Psychology is home to over 50 staff researching across the broad spectrum of psychology. We run a thriving mix of courses and have recently hosted over 40 research grants totaling over £4 million from the Economic and Social Research Council, the Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council, the Medical Research Council, the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council, and from EU and UK government departments, among others.

The School of Psychology has expertise in a number of research areas including health and wellbeing (obesity, eating behaviors, stress, sleep, exercise, chronic illness, risk perception, addiction etc.), developmental (infant and child cognition, identity and social development, atypical development, socioeconomic effect), cognition (creativity, decision making etc.), social (gender, stigma, inter group relations), neuroscience (brain plasticity, motor rehabilitation, and learning) and environmental psychology (sustainable behaviors, space and wellbeing). We have access to a range of facilities such as eye trackers, TMS, MRI scanner, EEG, a baby lab, driving simulator and a sleep lab. In addition, we have good contacts with local schools and hospitals. We are therefore looking for students who can become part of our research community.

Students are expected to complete at least 4 taught courses in their first year to cover research methods, academic practice and teaching and training. There are also a number of additional modules and courses available to them from our Masters programmes and run by the Researcher Development Programme. Students can also attend research seminars held by the school and the individual research groups. Students will have two supervisors and are expected to meet with them regularly. At the end of the first year they will attend a confirmation viva to enable progression into the rest of the PhD.
