Cultural Heritage MA by Research/PhD/PhD by Distance Learning
The MA by Research programme requires you to prepare a dissertation of up to 40,000 words on a topic of your choice, for which an academic staff member will provide expert supervision.
The PhD – the most advanced research degree – leads to a dissertation of up to 80,000 words on a subject of your choice and under the expert supervision of our academic staff. You can study for a PhD on campus or by Distance Learning .
PhD researchers are normally supervised by teams of two academic staff attached to the Institute but we are able to call upon a wide-range of University staff expertise and external advisors in order to provide the best possible support.
A programme of research training is provided through our College Graduate School, which involves an induction course, introduction to information technologies and the use of library and bibliographic resources, basic training in qualitative and quantitative research methods, and sessions on research planning, presentation skills and ethics.
Our PhD researchers are able to participate in our guest lecture programmes, seminars and events and are encouraged to participate in national and international conferences.
Our research themes, in which we are able to offer expertise, are not intended to be rigid as we recognise the wide spectrum of interpretations of cultural heritage, its cross-disciplinary nature and its international relevance. We welcome ideas for PhD which are innovative, challenging and which push at the boundaries of the many dimensions of cultural heritage. We will work with you to ensure that your research topic is ‘do-able' and will provide maximum interest and impact for you, in line with your future career aspirations.
Our research themes of interest are broad in scope and allow for your interests to be developed. They are:
World Heritage
Understanding Intangible Cultural Heritage
Valuing Heritage
Tourism and Cultural Change
Heritages of Conflict
Industrial Heritage Futures
Imagined and Mediated Pasts
