About the Programme

The Faculty of Education, Health and Wellbeing supports ground breaking research in a number of areas with intersections between them. Every subject area in the University that was evaluated by The Research Excellence Framework (REF 2014) was recognised as having world-leading elements.

In Education, Professor John Traxler's work on digital learning attracts prospective PhD students from around the world as does our unique partnership with The Centre for Research in Early Childhood where PhD students work in partnership with the Centre and the University on issues such as children's voices, justice for children and a range of particular pedagogic initiatives. We also specialise in national and international policy in lifelong learning; adult learning and the third sector; motivation, participation and achievement for adult learners. This area is pioneered by Professor Alan Tuckett and builds on partnerships with colleges across the country. We also offer a Professional Doctorate in Education (EdD) which allows part time students to follow a modular approach to a doctoral qualification.

In Health, we welcome PhD students ambitious to carry out research related to public health and health professions. We have students researching with us from all over the world but particularly from a range of African countries and China. We also encourage PhD applications from students interested in researching social work and social care. These areas can also be integrated into the Professional Doctorate in Health and Wellbeing, a qualification very similar to the EdD above.

In Psychology we are at the forefront of developments in Cyberpsychology and there are a range of other specific interest groups too such as eating behaviour psychology and health and psychological interventions which spans across the faculty disciplines. We also offer the Professional Doctorate in Counselling Psychology, a three-year, full-time doctoral programme training you to become a British Psychological Society (BPS) Chartered Counselling Psychologist and register with the Health & Care Professions Council (HCPC). The course integrates theoretical knowledge and clinical practice through a practice placement.

In Sport and Exercise science, PhD students are supported in a range of areas, particularly in research examining the effects of interventions designed to help people achieve their goals whether these are related to sport, exercise, physical activity or well-being. Topics of interest include emotion, mood, emotion regulation and coping. We are interested in research around the physical preparation for elite sports performers from junior to senior age groups. Current projects are looking at recovery strategies in football, relative age effect and injury profiling in combat sports. In terms of physical education, we are interested in how Physical Education teachers' current and past experiences influence how they interpret and teach various aspects of the curriculum.

The University was recognised with the Athena SWAN Bronze university award in April 2013. Work is proceeding to consolidate Bronze Award initiatives to progress toward reaccreditation in 2016.
