2 Fully-Funded PhD Studentships in Heritage Studies
As a partner in the Heritage Consortium (with Bradford, Huddersfield, Leeds Beckett, Northumbria, Sheffield Hallam and Teesside universities), the University of Hull invites high-quality proposals for 2 AHRC-funded PhD studentships tenable for three years from 25 September 2017. Successful candidates will undertake common cohort-based training in Heritage Research, and have access to facilities and research support across the Consortium. They will be registered and supervised at the University of Hull, with specialist co-supervision provided by another Consortium university and by two of the Consortium's strategic partners—Saltaire World Heritage Site (Bradford), and the Co-operative Heritage Trust (Manchester)—whose extensive and under-utilised research materials will form the basis of the two respective doctoral projects. Topics that might be investigated include:
- Saltaire: evaluation of World Heritage designated views and setting; conservation and interpretation of listed buildings; site accessibility; Saltaire's architectural, socio-economic history and transport history, increasing understanding of significance of World Heritage Sites.
and
- Co-operative: the Co-operative College; Edward Owen Greening, 1836-1923; National Co-operative Men's Guild and Mixed Guild; the Co-operative Group Collection; the British Federation of Young Co-operators and the Woodcraft Folk; co-operative businesses in wartime; the Co-op's interests in publishing; the Co-operative Movement in Manchester; producer co-operatives; Co-op holidays and housing
