Cardiff School of History, Archaeology and Religion is one of the most successful schools of its type in the UK. We are a community of researchers and teachers, undergraduates and postgraduates, devoted to the study of the past from prehistoric times to contemporary societies. The School is very well resourced and this facilitates teaching and research of the highest standard. At the 2008 Research Assessment Exercise, significant proportions of our research in Archaeology (55%) and History (45%) were assessed as showing work of international excellence.
Research at the School of History and Archaeology
The School can provide expert research supervision in all major leading subjects, in particular:

The School maintains collaborative links and research projects within the University, Wales (including the National Museum of Wales) and Europe.
The PhD Programme
The MPhil consists one or two years of full-time study, or a minimum of two years part-time. For the PhD, the period of study is a normally a minimum of three years full-time or five years part-time.
The School has a strong and supportive postgraduate community of approximately 30 Doctoral students. The wide range of subjects studied in Cardiff encourages students to establish links with other disciplines (e.g. architecture for historians, chemistry and geology for conservators). The School thus offers a stimulating environment for all kinds of interdisciplinary research whilst maintaining its traditional strengths.
Funding Opportunities
Postgraduates at the School attract funding from a range of sources. The Economic and Social History programme of the MSc in Social Science Research Methods is recognised for 1 + 3 ESRC applicants, while MPhil and PhD applicants in PhD in Economic and Social History at Cardiff who already possess an ESRC recognised Master's qualification are eligible to apply for + 3 funding at Cardiff.
The History and Welsh History Section at Cardiff is also recognised as an outlet for funding by the ESRC, while the University has also been awarded a number of AHRC Postgraduate Studentships in both History and Archaeology via a Block Grant Partnership for 2009-2013. In addition, the School also offers a number of competitive Postgraduate Studentships at PhD level, which may be held for up to three years of full-time postgraduate study, and offers financial assistance to support trips to conferences, archives or sites and other research expenses.
