About the Project
Synthetic chemists/ Biochemists/ Medicinal chemists of the 21st century must embrace the most appropriate tools in order to quickly and cheaply access desired molecules in the most environmentally benign manner.
i) The installation of a halogen into a molecule can provide a chemically orthogonal handle enabling selective chemical functionalization at this site. This research will focus on developing halogenases as tools for synthesis, exploring and modifying their ability to halogenate non natural substrates. The development of mild chemistries to enable selective functionalization of these halogenated compounds will also be explored.
Synthetic, Molecular Biological, and Enzymatic investigations into the biosynthesis of an unusual antibiotic. The mechanisms of an unusual series of enzymes will be explored, substrate scope of the enzymes will be extended, and these enzymes applied to the synthesis of existing and novel antibiotics and antiviral compounds.
The research group led by Dr Rebecca Goss comprises of an international and multidisciplinary team with expertise in enzymology, molecular biology, microbiology and synthetic organic chemistry.
No deadline is listed - but as exceptional candidates are identified, these 2 studentships will filled
