PhD Research Project
Supported by EPSRC and Bluewater Bio Ltd, a studentship up to £17,000 p.a. for 3 years plus UK/EU fees* is available
Cranfield University is seeking a highly motivated graduate to undertake an exciting research project to investigate the fundamentals of the performance of depth filters that have four layers of different granular media.
Project deliverables:
1. A survey of full-scale installations to establish baseline performance for each of the different applications.
2. A fundamental understanding of the factors that enable quadruple media filters to deliver enhanced performance.
3. Validation of process models developed on full-scale installations.
The work will begin a survey of existing full-scale Filterclear installations, from the UK to the Middle East and Asia, across different applications. These range from potable water through industrial water to wastewater treatment duties. Many of the sites are in Scotland and visits will be required, both to these reference sites and to the offices of FilterClear and parent group, Bluewater Bio. The project as a whole will involve close cooperation and knowledge transfer with this influential technology developer – see: www.bluewaterbio.com
Process parameters such as flowrates, headloss across beds and backwashing frequency will be measured. Pilot-scale experimental work will involve access to dedicated wastewater laboratories as well as different influent waters and wastewaters. Cranfield University is well placed in both aspects, offering a fully-equipped pilot hall backed up by a wide range of water laboratories and modern analytical equipment. Resources Funding is available through an Engineering and Physical Sciences (EPSRC) supported Doctoral Training Account (DTA) in the School of Applied Sciences.
Start date: September 2012
Entry Requirements
First or Second Class UK honours degree (or equivalent) in a relevant discipline such as science or engineering degree, including biological sciences.
