Application Deadline:
Applications accepted all year round
Funding Availability:
Competition Funded PhD Project (Students Worldwide)

The School of Psychology's Research Fund endowed in memory of Hilary Green currently funds at any one time part of a single 3-year UK/EU School Studentship for research towards a PhD in the area of the psychology of empathy, compassion and cooperation with ANY Supervisor(s) in the School. The research can also encompass biological or social bases or effects of cooperative motivation and emotion, such as ordinary or disordered development, later trauma, genetic factors, brain mechanisims, subcultural influences and interpersonal or inter-group processes.

A candidate for the HGRF-subsidised School Home/EU Studentship must have a PhD Supervisor or Co-supervisors agreed by the School and a PhD project proposal submitted by the Supervisor(s) for approval by the Fund's external academic advisors. Hence applicants for PhD study supported by the Fund should seek supervision among the School's staff and propose a start on research for the degree that encompasses the aims of the Fund and some aspect of the research interests of the supervisor(s) nominated in the online Application for entry to Graduate Studies. The fund is administered by Prof D Booth, who can also act as ONLY a second supervisor. A full list of potential supervisors in Psychology can be found at:
http://www.birmingham.ac.uk/schools/psychology/people/index.aspx

For more information about the topics covered please see:

How to apply for this Studentship:

The first step is to identify one or two potential PhD supervisors in the School of Psychology with whom you share research interests in HGRF areas. The name(s) should be entered on the online application form for Graduate Studies ( https://pga.bham.ac.uk/lpages/LES006.htm ) and your research proposal should state how you might start on research under that supervision. If you wish to discuss proposals with a potential supervisor before applying, you should email that person direct, enclosing a summary of your degree work and supervised research experience so far. On the Funding line of the application form, you can state that you would like to be considered for the HGRF Studentship if currently vacant.

Funding Notes:

Non-EU applicants are eligible for an HGRF Studentship with standard maintenance grant but they need to find other sources for the difference in registration fee from that for EU residents.
