Adressing the association between periodontitis and rheumatic arthritis

We offer a position at the Unit of Periodontology, Policlinics for Restorative Dentistry, Periodontology and Endodontology, Dental school, Ernst-Moritz-Arndt-University Greifswald, starting between 1 April (earliest) and 1 October 2012 (latest):

PhD in Epidemiology/Dentistry (Biometrician, Epidemiologist or Statistician)

The PhD position will be filled for three years and finishes with the completion of a PhD thesis (degree: Dr. rer. med.). A completed university studies other than medicine is required. The final grade needs to be at least 2.5 („good“). In case of a Bachelor’s degree, a Master’s degree is obligatory. Payment will be 20.000 Euro/year pre-tax.

Responsibilities:
• Evaluation of risk models utilising data from the Study of Health in Pomerania (SHIP) for different hypotheses adressing the association between periodontitis and rheumatic arthritis
• Evaluation and scienitific publication of results in international journals (three to five publications are expected)
• Writing interim reports
• Providing support for statistical analyses of other small projects

Special requests:
• Finished study at a university (Diploma or MSc) in Biometrics, Statistics, Biomathematics, Epidemiology, Public Health or related studies
• Expertise with statistical software (mainly STATA, but also R or SPSS)
• Expertise in multivariate regression modelling/ generalised models
• Interest in epidemiological / statistical work
• Epidemiological basic knowledge is advantageous
• Very good English knowledge in writing and speaking
• Good communication skills, good team worker

The PhD position offers you the chance to work within a team. You are motivated to publish your results in well-ranked international journals. As a PhD student you will graduate within an international graduate program – Rheumatoid Arthritis and Periodontal Inflammatory Disease (RAPID). Participating institutions are connected by close cooperations and an active exchange of scientific knowledge and expertise is aimed at. Further, you will have the chance to spend a certain time abroad. For a few weeks, you will assist other researchers at one of the cooperating institutions.
