About the Project

In recent years, the STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) research agenda has created an artificial separation within Universities that needs correction. To address this, the Creative Futures Research Centrewas created as a strategic, University-wide collaboration drawing on esteemed international advisers, andis based in the School of Creative & Cultural Industries, UWS. Since its inception, Research Associates have fostered collaborations between neuroscientists and artists, artificial intelligence researchers and musicians, philosophers and designers, computer games programmers and cultural theorists, social media scholars and business professionals, and more. The CFRC aspiresto reconstitute the knowledge economy by advancing interdisciplinaryresearch approaches.

Applications are sought for PhD projects that align with the work of the UWS Creative Futures Research Centre (http://creativefutur.es). Thematic areas include:

• Science: Public Engagement with Science, Science Communication.
• Technology: Social Media, Mobile Culture, eHealth, Mediated Learning
• Ethics of:Nanotechnology, Biotechnology, Information Technology, Cognitive Science
• Art: Science and Media Art Interactions, Public & Ecological Art Practices, Participation
• Media: Computer Games Studies & Journalism
• Culture: Urban/Rural Futures, Mega-Events & Policy, Cultural Economy & Value
Applications should specify areas of interest and give an outline of the proposed project, providing a clear indication of how the applicant’s background informs the work and the relevance of the study. The successful applicant will work with Professor Andy Miah (Director) and Graham Jeffery (Associate Director). The research will sit within the UWS Creative Futures Research Centre, a cross-faculty environment aimed at addressing research at the borders of STEM and non-STEM subjects. A Master degree in a relevant subject area will be an advantage. For more information about the centre, see http://creativefutur.es

Funding Notes

Successful candidates will receive a £6000 annual stipend payable for three years and payment of tuition fees (current value £3400).
This studentship is open to Home/EU candidates with a first degree in a relevant discipline.
Non-EU students can apply, but will not receive the stipend and will be required to pay fees.
Candidates must be available to commence their studies in October 2012.
All interviews will take place during between 21st May and 8th June 2012.
Please note that this project is part of a competitive round and there is no guarantee that it will be awarded.
