PHDCOM011 Mobile cloud computing: cloud computing for mobile device users

Dept/School/Faculty:
PhD Supervisor:
Co-Supervisor:
Application Deadline:

Funding Availability:
Competition Funded PhD Project (European/UK Students Only)

Mobile computing and communication have become ubiquitous and a necessity in our everyday life. However, mobile device users often encounter performance frustrations due to their mobile device’s intrinsic constraints in battery, processing power and storage capacity. Meanwhile, cloud computing has gained global momentum in recent years and can be explored to circumvent such problems thanks to the vast resources that it can potentially offer to mobile users. Mobile cloud computing is thus emerging as a major R&D topic to enable high-performance, innovative network applications. This project will investigate the opportunities opened up by the mobile cloud computing paradigm and explore new pathways between the mobile device and the infrastructure for improved users’ quality of experience and optimised utilisation of system resources. This project will take a practical approach and the proposed new system will be implemented, tested and evaluated in a state-of-the-art hardware-based cloud computing platform available in the Audio-Visual Communications and Networks Research (AVCN) research group.

The AVCN group (http://www.uws.ac.uk/avcn) have established expertise in mobile Internet protocol networks and multimedia applications. The two supervisors have been recently involved in a number of funded national or international projects in these areas. The outcomes of the group’s research have been disseminated through numerous prestigious international publications. The group has a well-equipped lab for various R&D projects. The ideal candidate should have considerable hands-on ICT experience and be proficient in programming (software development).

Funding Notes:

Successful candidates will receive a £6000 annual stipend payable for three years and payment of tuition fees (current value £3400).
This studentship is open to Home/EU candidates with a first degree in a relevant discipline.
Non-EU students can apply, but will not receive the stipend and will be required to pay fees.
Candidates must be available to commence their studies in October 2012.
All interviews will take place during between 21st May and 8th June 2012.
Please note that this project is part of a competitive round and there is no guarantee that it will be awarded.
