PhD Research Project

I am interested in supervising students on any aspect of metaphysics of science. This rapidly-growing area of metaphysics involves questions about laws, chances, modality, dispositions, forces, counterfactuals, explanation, fundamentality, grounding, mereology, space and time. Questions could include:

Are laws of nature necessary, and if so, in what sense?
Are non-trivial objective chances compatible with determinism?
How do chances relate to counterfactuals?
Do we need the ideology of fundamentality and grounding to make sense of science?
Could space and time be non-fundamental?
Must there be a fundamental level?

Funding Notes:

Our applications for Arts and Humanities Research Council Funding are now open. We are able to offer 13 doctoral studentships for study in Arts and Humanities.
