Separation and Purification for Continuous Processing using Organic Solvent Nanofiltration

Dept/School/Faculty:
PhD Supervisor:
Application Deadline:
Applications accepted all year round

Imperial College maintains a leading position in organic solvent nanofiltration (OSN) - an emerging technology for molecular separations in organic liquids. An exciting opportunity has arisen within a sponsored project for a fully funded 3-4 year PhD on Separation and Purification in Continuous Processing Using Organic Solvent Nanofiltration under the supervision of Professor Andrew Livingston. The purpose of the project, which is funded by one of the largest global pharmaceutical companies and in collaboration with a leading US Institution, is to develop and apply novel organic solvent nanofiltration (OSN) based membrane separation processes to carry out separations and purifications in continuous flow systems. We are looking for an enthusiastic and motivated student with an excellent first MEng degree (1st class preferred) or MSc in chemical engineering. This 3 year studentship provides full support for tuition fees, all associated research costs and an annual tax-free stipend of £15,590 p.a. The candidate is expected to start as soon as possible. All applicants must be fluent in spoken and written English.

The Department of Chemical Engineering is one of the leading departments of Chemical Engineering in the world and the largest such Department in a UK University. Its research is consistently recognised as world-leading, with the Department heading the ranking list in the last three Research Assessment Exercises, in 1996, 2001 and most recently 2008. Research is organised into eleven multidisciplinary focus areas which cover most aspects of chemical engineering and related scientific disciplines. We have a large research school with over 200 graduate students studying for PhD degrees.
