About the Project

Potassium channels (K+) have been identified as key mediators of cellular responses to changes in metabolic status. These membrane proteins are important for the “oxygen sensing” function of specialised tissues and we have previously identified the electrophysiological properties of an oxygen-sensitive K+ channel in pulmonary vein smooth muscle (PVSMC). This project will assess the effects of features associated with metabolic syndrome on K+ channel function and expression in PVSMC and will contribute to our understanding of how and why pulmonary vascular diseases such as pulmonary venous hypertension develop. The project may involve: myography; tissue culture; patch clamp electrophysiology and molecular biology. A background in physiology/pharmacology/biomedical science is essential, preferably with laboratory experience and an interest in the cardiovascular system.
Candidates should be highly motivated with a strong commitment to academic research. A First Class, or a 2.1 Honours Degree (or equivalent) or a Masters Qualification in a relevant discipline is required. Relevant professional experience will also be considered. Each studentship provides full university fees for UK/EU applicants and a tax-free maintenance allowance of £13,590 per annum for 3 years (UK Research Council Rates). The studentship is available to start in October 2012. Interviews will be held on the 7th / 8th June 2012. Further details can be obtained at http://www.rgu.ac.uk/research/graduate-schools/applying-for-a-research-degree/funded-studentship-opportunities.
