This is 1 of 2 fully funded PhD Studentships in phase-based applications of x-rays.
The UCL XPCi (X-ray Phase Contrast imaging) Group, part of the Radiation Physics Group in the UCL Department of Medical Physics and Bioengineering, has obtained funding from the ESPRC (in the form of the prestigious “Challenging Engineering” award) to advance the state-of-the-art of phase-based applications of x-rays (imaging in particular).
The activities will be primarily, but not only, based around the following two aspects:
1) Further development of the novel approach to XPCi recently developed by the group. Two separate prototypes have been built, and these will be further developed to increase sensitivity and include “mixed” imaging modalities, both in 2 and 3-D, and including quantitative approaches. Targeted applications will include, but not be limited to, medicine, biology, material science, cultural heritage preservation,
non-destructive testing.
2) Work in collaboration with the three synchrotrons which are partners in the Chall. Eng. grant (Diamond, the ESRF and ELETTRA) to develop new advanced synchrotron-based phase methods.
We are looking for a talented and enthusiastic student to join us in this exciting venture. Candidates should have a first degree in physics or a physics-related area. Previous experience in the field of x-ray imaging would be a plus. We expect that the multidisciplinary nature of the projects will allow the successful candidate to gain experience in a plurality of areas, and a consequently high number of transferrable skills.
