About the Project

A studentship is available to study for a DPhil degree in the Photonic Nanomaterials Group in the Department of Materials, University of Oxford (http://users.ox.ac.uk/~png). The project will entail studying the physics of nanocrystalline semiconductor quantum dots positioned in novel optical microcavities developed recently by the group. The targets of the project are to achieve and explore the regime of strong coupling between an exciton in the quantum dot and the resonant cavity mode at low temperature. This will enable the study of polariton physics with engineered excitons, providing novel routes to quantum information devices.

The student will join a vibrant and growing photonics community (about 40 research groups) in Oxford and benefit from close interactions with several other leading groups in the fields of quantum photonics, nanomaterials and quantum information.

Applications will be considered as and when they are received and this position will be filled as soon as possible, but the latest date for considering applications will be 20 August 2012. Questions concerning the project can be addressed to Dr Jason Smith ([Email Address Removed]). General enquiries on how to apply can be made by e-mail to [Email Address Removed]. If you decide to apply for a studentship then you must complete the standard Oxford University Application for Graduate Studies and further information and an electronic copy of the application form can be found at http://www.ox.ac.uk/admissions/postgraduate_courses/apply/index.html. Please also send a CV and the names of your three referees by e-mail directly to Jason Smith at [Email Address Removed].

Funding Notes

This 3.5 year studentship is fully funded by The Leverhulme Trust and Corpus Christi College. The studentship provides financial support for living expenses with an annual maintenance stipend of £13,590, College and university fees for candidates with UK or EU nationality.
