Vacancy Information
Applicants are sought for an exciting EPSRC CASE PhD studentship with UCL and Airbus Operations Ltd in partnership with the UK National Physical Laboratory (NPL). The project is driven by Airbus who wish to enhance their capability to measure complex freeform surface shape characteristics defined by aerodynamics and design to meet requirements in production and structural testing.

Studentship Description
The project will explore, specify and test state of the art measurement procedures and systems which can be confidently used in wing manufacture and structural testing to support delivery of the next generation of Airbus aircraft that will meet the future stringent requirements for improved performance and lower cost. The focus of this study is to be able to confidently and repeatedly measure relevant locations and characteristics defined by aerodynamics and structural design. The measures required must be fit for purpose for input into a diversity models used by Airbus to (i) ensure build conformance and (ii) to verify improved performance and flight efficiency.

Person Specification
Applicants should have a good computing science or engineering honours degree (first/upper second) in engineering, physics, mathematics or computer science, or a lower second with appropriate post-graduate training or industrial experience. Experience in metrology, 3D imaging and spatially related computer programming will be an advantage.

Eligibility
Applications are invited from UK and EU members, residing in UK. Applicants must meet the EPSRC eligibility requirements
