About the Project

Fully Funded PhD project in Complex Systems Simulation

Fully-funded PhD opportunity for UK/EU students for DSTL sponsored project on ‘Social and Ethical Concerns for Identity within Modern Technology’ at the Institute for Complex Systems Simulation at the University of Southampton. Start date: October 2012

Project:
This project represents an innovative and timely combination of social and legal aspects involving the right to privacy and anonymity. Given the ever-increasing provision of service and communication through online media, this is now an urgent issue, precisely because citizens have a right to anonymity whilst service operators have a need to verify usage of their systems. In this sense, identity becomes a complex concept, reflecting issues of stability, context, privacy and ownership across an increasing array of media, both real and virtual.

One way forward is to recognize that the sum total of our identity is reflected not in any one metric but in the combination of pieces of information. For this, we use the term ‘distributed identity’. With this notion comes the sense that we can reveal aspects of our identity to gain access to information or services, without compromising our privacy too far. The goal within this project is to use a combination of computational modelling and psychological experimentation to explore (i) the high value pieces of information that may reveal identity, (ii) the ways in which individuals manage their identity, and (iii) the challenges that this poses for identity assurance within a legal, ethical, and socially acceptable framework.

We are looking for:
Applications are invited from UK/EU candidates with good first or Masters degrees in Computer Science, Mathematics, or other relevant disciplines, to work as a research (PhD) student within the Doctoral Training Centre of the Institute for Complex Systems Simulation (ICSSS) at the University of Southampton, for a 4 year period under the supervision of Dr Sarah Stevenage.

The candidate should be interested in working in a highly inter-disciplinary project utilising inspiration from social and cognitive psychology (such as self management, impression formation, minimal disclosure, and human and automated biometric recognition) and using computational methods to simulate complex combinatorial approaches to identity management. An understanding of social, ethical and legal frameworks in identity and privacy would be an advantage.

About the ICSS Doctoral Training Centre at Southampton

The ICSS PhD programme includes an initial 12-month taught component followed by three years of doctoral research and offers the opportunity to pursue research within a growing community of like-minded cross-disciplinary students (~80 students as of Oct 2012) and an environment of broad supervisory expertise: see http://www.icss.soton.ac.uk/programme/index.html, http://www.aic.ecs.soton.ac.uk/

The successful candidate will receive a research studentship award of £16,500 per annum, plus the payment of the standard UK/EU student fees.

How to Apply

This project has been funded by DSTL and the successful candidate will be a fully funded student of the ICSS Doctoral Training Centre. Applications from UK home and EU students are eligible. The student will commence in October 2012.
Applications will be considered until the position is filled.

Interested students should contact Sarah Stevenage ([Email Address Removed]) immediately.

Formal applications should be made by following the instructions on the DTC web page (www.icss.soton.ac.uk/apply.html) and quoting “DSTLSS”.
