Bioreactors for Stem Cell Niche Recapitulation

Our laboratory is interested in replicating the complex cellular and physical microenvironment found within the bone marrow stem cell niche. This unique microenvironment supports your hematopoietic stem cells (blood stem cells) over a lifetime, whilst simultaneously enabling the production of over 400 billion new blood cells every day. Interestingly, the bone marrow niche is also the major target for the metastasis of prostate cancer (and to many other cancers, although to a lesser extent). The capacity to replicate the bone marrow stem cell niche microenvironment will have significant immediate applications in bone marrow and umbilical cord blood transplantation, the study and treatment of prostate cancer, and the development of blood factories. The advertised PhD project will enable students to work with bioengineers, blood stem cell experts and cancer biologists – all focused on recapitulation of the bone marrow stem cell niche.


This PhD Project in Dr Mike Doran’s laboratory comes with a full scholarship and is open to international candidates.

INSTITUTE
Dr Mike Doran’s bioengineering team is focused on stem cell applications in regenerative medicine, and stem cell models for fundamental investigations into cancer metastasis and/or stem cell regulation. His new laboratory is set up in the incredible new Translational Research Institute (TRI) in Brisbane Australia. This institute is already one of the premier biomedical research hubs in this hemisphere. You will be overwhelmed by the Institute’s capacity/facilities, as well as the quality of the people and the beauty of the city.
