About the Project

The University of the West of Scotland and the Waltham Centre for Pet Nutrition are offering a Ph.D. studentship to investigate the effect of environmental stress and diet on colour and health in ornamental fish species. Given that many manufactured fish diets aim to enhance ornamental fish colour, it is important to the industry to understand the interactions between stress, diet and colour in ornamental fishes. Furthermore, the majority of natural carotenoids used to enhance colouration in fish also act as antioxidants. Therefore potential health benefits may be provided to the fish as a result of dietary ingestion. This Ph.D. will combine biological and chemical techniques with the aim of promoting the welfare of fish kept in home aquaria. This post offers an excellent opportunity to carry out applied research in collaboration with an industrial partner.
