About the Project

Applications are invited for a fully-funded three year Ph.D. studentship in Waterford Institute of Technology. The successful candidate will join the Pharmaceutical and Molecular Biotechnology Research Centre (PMBRC) and will work in close collaboration with Teva Pharmaceuticals.
The PMBRC conducts fundamental, industrial and commercial research in pharmaceutical science and technologies, often with collaborators in Ireland and internationally (http://pmbrc.org). The PMBRC has been awarded funding by Teva Pharmaceuticals to fund a postgraduate student to carry out research in the area of inhalations. The project will involve the solid state characterisation of a range of crystalline pharmaceutical materials and investigating the impact of key material properties on the performance of a novel dry powder inhaler. Characterisation techniques will include surface energy analysis, microcalorimetry, next generation impactor, DSC, TGA, DVS, nitrogen sorption, particle size analysis, SEM, XRPD and solid-state NMR studies. The student will carry out research both in the PMBRC research labs and at the Teva site in Waterford.
Applications are invited from students with an appropriate background in material’s science and an interest in characterisation of pharmaceutical materials. Applicants should hold a minimum of a 2.2 degree in Chemistry, Materials Science, Pharmacy or a related field. A 2.1 or a 1.1 degree is desirable. Good communication skills and motivation to learn, both by tuition and independently, are essential.

Applicants whose first language is not English must submit evidence of competency in English, please see WIT’s English Language Requirements for details.
