Prof Pete Smith  No more applications being accepted  Funded PhD Project (European/UK Students Only)

About the Project

Supervisors: Professor Pete Smith (University of Aberdeen), Dr Christian Davis (Shell, Houston) and Dr Niall McNamara (CEH)

This project will involve modelling the impact of bioenergy production in Europe on ecosystem services. The distribution and production of second generation energy crops, such as Miscanthus, Short Rotation Coppice and Short Rotation Forestry, will be modelled, and ecosystem models will then be used to examine the imacts of these crops on ecosystem services, such as carbon storage, greenhouse gas emissions and soil, water and air quality. The project will build on models of energy crop production (Hastings et al, 2009), soil impacts (Hillier et al, 2009), greenhouse gas emissions (Smith et al, 2010) and other ecosystem services (Smith et al, 2013), and work undertaken in the UK on the ETI-funded ELUM project.

Funding Notes

Funded by the College of Life Sciences & Medicine and Shell. Full funding is available to UK/EU applicants only. International candidates are welcome to apply but would need to provide their own funding of approximately £11,400 per annum to meet the difference between UK and Overseas fees.

Candidates should have (or expect to achieve) a minimum of a 2.1 Honours degree in a relevant subject. Applicants with a minimum of a 2.2 Honours degree may be considered provided they have a Distinction at Masters level.

References

Please apply for admission to the 'Degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Biological Science' to ensure that your application is passed to the correct college for processing.

Please provide a copy of the degree certificate and transcript for each previous degree undertaken, a copy of your English language proficiency certificate (if relevant), and contact details of two referees who can comment on your previous academic performance (at least one should be from your current degree programme). References will be requested if you are selected for interview. Incomplete applications will not be considered.
