About the Project

The Health Sciences Integrated PhD is an important step in developing clinical academic research careers for nurses and allied health professionals, social care professionals and graduates from other disciplines. It will provide education and training for those wishing to utilise both quantitative and qualitative research methodologies, focusing on mixed methodology as an underpinning philosophy.

The programme has been designed to allow students from different areas of practice to learn together. It will include core and compulsory modules developed to enhance skills in research, and will help students contextualise their learning through their membership of a community of practice and research. Students will access two research modules from the Department of Sociology, and benefit from the opportunity to mix with other disciplines and gain a wider perspective of health sciences research.

The programme is suitable for allied health professionals in clinical practice and management who seek to hold leadership positions within health and care, as well as educational organisations, and students who wish to enhance their career in applied research and innovation in practice, education, and leadership.

Participants will carry out original research contributing to new knowledge and will be actively encouraged to present and publish their research before they graduate.

All Integrated PhD students receive supervision from at least two supervisors in their specialist field. With taught components comprising various research modules, students will be able to hone their research skills and knowledge. Close links with practice are encouraged, and many research projects include collaborative work. There are regular research seminars and doctoral student-led discussions on methodology and other research issues. The opportunities for students with postgraduate qualifications from Surrey are very wide, and not limited to the area in which you have studied.
