A natural product as a mediator of virulence in Ralstonia solanacearum

The bacterium Ralstonia solanacearum is a devastating plant pathogen which infects economically important crops, such as potato, tomato, and banana. Recent evidence suggests that an as yet uncharacterized natural product contributes to the virulence of the bacterium. The aim of this project is to identify the phytotoxin and to explore its biological effects. This project will strengthen our understanding of the significance of natural products in plant-microbe interactions.

We expect:
• a Master’s degree (or equivalent) in Pharmacy, Food Chemistry, Chemistry or Chemical Biology. Candidates about to earn their degree are welcome to apply.
• desirable methodological skills: Applicants must have a strong background in analytical chemistry. Laboratory experience in chromatographic separation techniques (HPLC, GC) is absolutely required. Additional skills in spectroscopy (NMR, MS) are desirable.
• high motivation and interest to join one of the interdisciplinary research areas of JSMC
• creativity and interest to shape your own thesis project
• an integrative and cooperative personality with enthusiasm for actively participating in the lively JSMC Community
• very good communication skills in English (instruction language at JSMC)
