About the Project

A PhD scholarship in chemistry is offered for research into biologically patterning of surfaces based at the School of Chemical Sciences at the University of Auckland. The interface between solid surfaces and biological systems is essential for a number of biotechnological devices, but is challenging to study. The student will use biological building and chemical methods to pattern and characterise solid surfaces. This will include using advanced characterisation techniques including synchrotron X-ray and neutron scattering, electron microscopy, and ellipsometry.

A BSc (Hons 1 or 2.1), MSc or equivalent in Chemistry or a related field, with specific interest in colloidal and surface chemistry, or biological patterning. Some synthetic experience would be desirable but not essential. Previous experience in neutron or X-ray scattering not essential.

NOTE: The PhD start date is flexible, so students near completion of an appropriate Honours or Masters degree are also encouraged to apply.

Application MUST INCLUDE a copy of academic record, a CV, and a covering letter: Apply by email to Dr D J McGillivray, [Email Address Removed]

Funding Notes

Funded by the MacDiarmid Institute of Advanced Materials and Nanotechnology (New Zealand). Funding will cover stipend ($27,500 NZD tax free per annum) and student fees.

Students must be able to obtain a student visa for NZ, and be allowed to travel to Australia.
