Funded PhD Project (Students Worldwide)
About the Project
The Cancer Research UK Cambridge Institute is a joint venture between the Charity, Cancer Research UK, and the University of Cambridge. The Institute opened in 2007 and has excellent state-of-the-art facilities. Research ranges from basic cancer biology and computational biology through to translational research and clinical application.
Graduate students play pivotal roles in the continuing success of our research programmes and gaining a studentship in the Institute is an excellent opportunity to start a research career in an environment committed to training outstanding cancer research scientists of the future.
A Cancer Research UK-funded PhD studentship is available for study of the project entitled: New strategies for lineage tracing of cancer stem cells in transgenic models
The development of Cas/CRISPR technology to engineer mammalian genomes greatly increases our ability to introduce designer mutations or modifications into model systems. In recent years the functional organisation of tissue stem cells in homeostasis has been revealed using clonal level lineage tracing using transgenic models. However although highly informative in homeostasis there is considerable difficulty in applying this type of approach to pathologies such as cancer. This is because the molecular clockwork involved in activating a clonal marker uses conditional Cre/lox strategies that are also required for cancer induction, largely precluding their use to achieve both outcomes.
This project will entail introducing and applying alternative conditionally activated alleles that are complementary to and used in conjunction with Cre/lox to allow clonal level lineage tracing in intestinal tumour models.
Applicants should have experience in CAS/CRISPR technology and in bacterial cloning. A degree and background in Molecular Biology and/or Genetics will be essential as will a reasonable amount of lab experience.

Funding Notes
No nationality restrictions apply to Cancer Research UK funded studentships and successful applicants will be registered for study with the University of Cambridge. Applications are invited from recent graduates or final year undergraduates who hold or expect to gain a first/upper second class degree (or equivalent) in a relevant subject from any recognised university worldwide. A Cancer Research UK studentship includes full funding for University and College fees and in addition, a stipend of £19,000 per annum.
