About the Project

Dr Joseph Beames is a new appointee at Cardiff University and is seeking a highly motivated recent graduate to join his research group as he establishes an ambitious program of research in advanced spectroscopy and dynamics.

The research in this group seeks to probe important atmospheric, physical and analytical chemistry problems using UV-Vis and infrared laser-based spectroscopic techniques. The key goals are to sensitively and quantitatively detect trace gases and reactive intermediates using cavity ring down spectrometry, and to begin to probe the nucleation and chemical composition of particulate matter (aerosols). This project will involve novel experimental design and development, alongside careful spectroscopic measurements and complementary computational/theoretical analysis. This project provides an exciting opportunity for a motivated graduate student to gain a broad physical chemistry skill set, and to help build a spectrometer from the ground up.

The successful applicant will likely have a good first degree (2.i or better) or European equivalent and a Masters in Chemistry. First-hand experience in advanced spectroscopy is highly desirable, ideally with a familiarity of laser based techniques. Some knowledge of ab initio computational methods, LabView programming and/or experimental design are also preferred. A self-starter with good interpersonal skills and a drive to succeed, you will be highly motivated and relish the opportunity to take a leading role in establishing this new research program.

One studentship is available. Cardiff University reserves the right to close applications early should sufficient applications be received.

Funding Notes

This studentship consists of full UK/EU tuition fees, as well as a Doctoral Stipend matching UK Research Council National Minimum (£14,057 p.a. for 2015/16, updated each year).
Full awards (fees plus maintenance stipend) are open to UK Nationals and EU students who can satisfy UK residency requirements. To be eligible for full award, EU Nationals must have been in the UK for at least 3 years prior to the start of this course. EU Nationals who do not meet the above residency requirement may be eligible for a fees only award. Please check on application.
