About the Project
Project Description
The past two decades have witnessed rapid growth and remarkable transformation in Chinese market. However, the development of Chinese foreign subsidiaries in the host countries is not going well. Chinese firms are often accused of social misdeeds, including environmental pollution, product quality flaws, or abusive labor. These accusations easily turn into public crises, which would be exposed to national media, causing long-lasting and serious financial and reputational damage. This project explores the mechanisms through which corporate social responsibility (CSR) activities impact the outward FDI of Chinese firms. We consider CSR as non-market strategy to help Chinese firms gain legitimacy and adapt into local contexts. At the same time, the effect of CSR activities is contingent on the host institutional environment and the expectations of local stakeholders. This project will conduct case study and quantitative analysis to develop and test our theoretical framework.
