About the Project

At the Leibniz ScienceCampus InfectoOptics in Jena infection biologists and photonics scientists work together to develop urgently needed novel optical diagnostic tools for infectious diseases. InfectoOptics combines research in the field of optical high technologies with current topics in infection biology. The InfectoOptics doctoral researchers are integrated into the Jena School for Microbial Communication (www.jsmc.uni-jena.de), a graduate training program funded by the Excellence Initiative of the German Research Foundation.

Automatic quantification of cell morphology

The scientific aim of the project BLOODi is establish the concept of a dynamic hemogram from whole blood infection assays. Within the dynamic hemogram information on the migration and interaction of blood cells is captured and utilized as novel source of information. The information will be tested as biomarker to characterize whole blood infections. The focus of the outlined PhD project is the quantification of morphological changes of white blood cells occurring while an infection is ongoing and to investigate if these morphological changes are dependent on the causing pathogens.

We expect:
• a Master’s degree (or equivalent) in Natural Sciences (physics, mathematics) Candidates about to earn their degree are welcome to apply.
• desirable methodological skills: programming skills in Python, Matlab or R
• high motivation and interest to join one of the interdisciplinary research areas of InfectoOptics
• creativity and interest to shape your own thesis project
• an integrative and cooperative personality with enthusiasm for actively participating in the Leibniz ScienceCampus Community
• very good communication skills in English
