About the Project

At the Leibniz ScienceCampus InfectoOptics in Jena infection biologists and photonics scientists work together to develop urgently needed novel optical diagnostic tools for infectious diseases. InfectoOptics combines research in the field of optical high technologies with current topics in infection biology. The InfectoOptics doctoral researchers are integrated into the Jena School for Microbial Communication (www.jsmc.uni-jena.de), a graduate training program funded by the Excellence Initiative of the German Research Foundation.

Concept and Design droplet-based microfluidic systems with incorporated optical fibers

A smart, fiber bundle detection platform for droplet based microfluidics shall be developed. The idea is to detect forward and backward scattered / reflected/ transmissed light by placing bundled fibers at the input and the opposite output side of a microfluidic channel with picoliter droplets that contain microorganisms, e.g. pathogenes. A variety of detection methodologies that are linked to the structure of the microorganism can be applied to such a sensor setup, ranging from simple absorption and fluorescence measurements to advanced techniques such as Raman or back-/ forward scattered light analysis.

We expect:
• a Master’s degree (or equivalent) in Natural, Engineering or Photonics Sciences. Candidates about to earn their degree are welcome to apply.
• desirable methodological skills: fundamentals of optical and mechanical modelling, manufacturing technologies, setup of laboratory devices, measurement techniques
• high motivation and interest to join one of the interdisciplinary research areas of InfectoOptics
• creativity and interest to shape your own thesis project
• an integrative and cooperative personality with enthusiasm for actively participating in the Leibniz ScienceCampus Community
• very good communication skills in English
