About the Project

At the Leibniz ScienceCampus InfectoOptics in Jena infection biologists and photonics scientists work together to develop urgently needed novel optical diagnostic tools for infectious diseases. InfectoOptics combines research in the field of optical high technologies with current topics in infection biology. The InfectoOptics doctoral researchers are integrated into the Jena School for Microbial Communication (www.jsmc.uni-jena.de), a graduate training program funded by the Excellence Initiative of the German Research Foundation.

Fiber-based electro-static Paul traps for the in-vivo diagnostics of epidemic diseases
The objective of the BLOODi project is to combat infectious diseases with advanced photonic technology. One particular important method to identify pathogenic species such as infected cells or bacteria is Raman spectroscopy of single objects. The aim of this PhD project is to establish a fundamentally new platform for in-vivo single particle Raman spectroscopy by implementing a fiber-based electro-static trap (Paul trap) at the end of a microstructure optical fiber. This approach is fundamentally novel and will allow for the first time in-vivo Raman-based diagnostics of particular diseases. We expect:
• a Master’s degree (or equivalent) in Natural Sciences (photonic, physics). Candidates about to earn their degree are welcome to apply.
• desirable methodological skills: spectroscopy, photonics, biophotonics
• high motivation and interest to join one of the interdisciplinary research areas of InfectoOptics
• creativity and interest to shape your own thesis project
• an integrative and cooperative personality with enthusiasm for actively participating in the Leibniz ScienceCampus Community
• very good communication skills in English
